It’s off topic here but the big numbers in India’s other cherished sport - Cricket are worth a mention! Among the top bidders were
Vijay Mallya, another industrialist Mukesh Ambani and then bollywood biggies like Shahrukh Khan, Juhi Chawla and Preity Zinta. In the order of mention, Vijay Mallya who it seems now is a very big sports fan (and some one who is generous in throwing
money on the things he loves) won the bid for the Bangalore team ($111.6 million) Says Kingfisher/UB group will use this channel to promote their brand and are very excited. I am sure he is. Mukesh Ambani of Relliance Industries won the most sort after Mumbai team ($111.9 million,) Shahrukh along Juhi and Jay Mehta got the Kolkata team ($75.09 million,) Preity & her flame — Ness Wadia won the bid for the Mohali team ($76 million.) Whew some big numbers there!
All in all, Indian cricket was auctioned for a whopping $718 million on Thursday. That alone is a figure that may have been unimaginable till a few years ago, but when $1.02 billion, which flowed into the coffers following the sale of the TV rights for the Indian Premier League (IPL), is added to it, it becomes mind-boggling at $1.72 billion that’s a lot of cash whew… but there’s one thing of course that the money has to be paid over a period of ten years. So, the numbers then are still big but not THAT BIG. But one thing is certain that such a model is great for the sport and the many good players that are stuck in the domestic circuit. Maybe if racing really takes of than we can have a thing like this or like the American Nascar Series here in India in the coming decade as well. (One can hope at least)
