Ferrari in MelbourneFinally after a long wait, the season is about to kick off. Technically though the first race will be held on Sunday 16th march, the Australian weekend begins with the practice session on Friday tomorrow itself!! :) So, the first test for our beloved ‘Force India’ is very close at hand and so is the test of form of other teams as well. We get actual idea of the form of all the teams tomorror. The dissapointment I have is that Star Sports (which telecasts F1 in India) does not telecast the Friday practice session. Race coverage starts from the qualifier’s on Saturday. Or if Start does telecast the Practice sessions, I don’t know when.

Anyway, if the recent tests in Barcelona and the individual team’s bases are any indications, then all of the top names in the driver’s lists, Kimi, Hamilton, Massa and even Alonso are in top form. So, one can hope to see great competitive racing right from the start of the bat this season. A typical F1 weekend (in case you are only now taking interest in F1) starts with the practice sessions on Friday, then some more practise on Saturday morning, then the qualifying on Saturday and then finally the race on Sunday. That is followed by the podium ceremonies of course.

Everybody’s expecting the whole weekend of the first round in Australia itself to be a cracker. The  Circuit in Melbourne is one the best in the F1 Calendar. It has plenty of high speed straights and corners with over taking opportunities. Add to that the fact that FIA (the governing body of the sport) has brought in some new regulation changes for the 2008 season and one of them is that Traction Control Systems are not allowed any more. Traction Control is a term for a ‘driver aid’ which was built in to F1 cars up until the 2007 season. It just prevents the rear wheels spinning if a driver applies too much power and allows for the tires of the car to grip the road better over all.

So, what this means is that there is more emphasis on driver skill and naturally some will be more skilled in this area and some will be less skilled. The possibility of drivers making more errors has also increased and thus the possibility of overtaking on track has also increased. It is a good change for the sport and it is for the viewers/fans who think that F1 racing is all about cars going round and round around the circuits and find F1 boring.  podium-2007-australia_kimi

It’ll be very very interesting to see how the drivers fare on the Melbourne track without the traction controls and some other new handicaps that the FIA has brought in. And    finally, last year’s Australian GP was won by Kimi Raikkonen. My money is on him for this year as well, who’s your money on…??
