Our boys couldn’t even finish the race today unfortunately: Fisichella was classified as
22nd and Sutil was classified as 10th. Both the
drivers were out of the race early due to mechanical failures. Interestingly, all
cars running Ferrari engines like Force India Ferrari and even Ferrari itself could not finish the race, so some reliability issues for Ferrari in the first round itself! Anyway, our boys only lasted till the 10th lap and could not hog TV coverage also. It was going to be this way at least for the first few races; sad but true!
As for the interesting part of the Australian GP, Hamilton was strong all the way starting from his Pole position, he crossed the chequered flag with about a minute between him and the second car which was that of Nick Hiedfeld from BMW instead of the man who had qualified second – Robert Kubica. And third position went to Nico Rosberg of Williams. All one can perhaps say is that nobody not even these guys themselves must have expected this. For the Ferrari’s, Massa got out early and Kimi was classified as 9th after he retired with 5 laps to go. The saying that statistics and scores never tell the full story can’t be truer than for Kimi’s result, after staring from the 16th position on the grid, he made up 13 positions and was good for 3rd if not second behind Hamilton, but he tried too hard today and fortune did not favor his bravery today, he skid of the track 2 times in different incidents, had engine and chassis trouble but he still was as fast as he was, simply awesome to watch!
Last years winner Alonso bagged the 4th position and McLaren’s second fiddle Heikki finished on 5th. But again, that does not tell you the complete story, Kovaleinen did have the pace and was doing well, but poor strategy and driving errors cost him dearly. Anyway, you have to hand it to the McLaren team and Ronn Dennis! After a season like they had last year in 2007: both drivers finishing just 1 points shy of World Championship, the big scandal about Ferrari’s data because of which they were finned 150 million $’s!!!! Then there was the internal strife between Alonso and Hamilton and as if all this wasn’t enough, the Ferrari sympethetic press had a lot of negative things to say about Ronn Dennis and his team.
So, what does Mclaren do after all of this, it comes to the first round and almost makes it a McLaren 1 & 2. Hamilton winning was great and their cars sure demonstrated the Mclaren’s pace! Finally, don’t forget BMW, Williams & Renault; after a miserable season or seasons these teams got their drivers 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively. If only these teams can keep going at this pace or even improve upon it even, we will have a cracker of a season this year!!
