The ongoing fight for a drive

Force India has supposedly completed 2 winter tests and has had a review of the progress made with Mr. Mallya on Thursday December 13Th. It is now the 19Th of December and quite disapointingly, Force India hasn’t yet been able to decide who will be their second driver with Adrian Sutil who is more or less confirmed for a drive with the team in 2008.

For the other spot, we have seen the team running a whole list of drivers in the last few weeks. It turned out to be a choice between old timers like Giancarlo Fisichella and Ralf Schumacher and semi-proven youngsters such as Tonio Liuzzi and Christian Klien. Klien as is famous on the paddock is not very good with technical feedback this is at least half of what goes in to making a good driver in Formula1. Ralf Schumacher has already announced that he might be quitting now after a nightmarish test with Force India, questions remain about his motivation and consistency as well. So, we can take it that the choice is ultimately between Giancarlo Fisichella and Tonio Liuzzi. So, it should be an easy choice for the Force India team’s thikng tank, if it’s capable of thinking, it should in my view listen to F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone’s remarks about Fisichella that he [Fisichella] should now be retiring. Giancharlo is an old gag you might say and never had it in him even when he was racing with the team that had the pace to challenge Ferrari’s and Mclaren’s often go flying into distance as well. Then he was also the second fiddle to Alonso.

I like the way it's put on the
Driver decisions at Force India F1 news at Grandprix.com

When you boil it all down will a soon-to-be 35-year-old with two kids and no real chance of getting back to the higher echelons of the sport after a career stretching back 12 years, really be as motivated as a 27-year-old who has been frustrated and knows that his chances of being a top F1 star are slipping away if he does not get a decent opportunity soon? The other question is whether Fisichella is really the man with the right image for a team that is aiming to inspire hundreds of millions of new India fans who are looking at F1 hoping to see dynamic, young and charismatic stars?
